Over the years, we’ve heard about many martial artists who have taken on the Gracie challenge. We’ve seen the family’s most notable victories, but has a challenger ever won a Gracie challenge?
The answer is yes and one of the most notable was a French martial artist named Damien Riccio. Read below to see how this challenge went down.
Damien Riccio Challenges Robin Gracie
In 2003, during a seminar in Perpignan, France, French MMA fighter and karate black belt Damien Riccio challenged Robin Gracie, the youngest son of Hélio Gracie, to a vale tudo match.
This was part of the Gracie Challenge, where the Gracie family invited martial artists to test their Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu against other styles.
During this time, there hadn’t been a noted Gracie Challenge in years. Robin Gracie was also not a fighter.
Riccio arrived uninvited, and despite Robin’s lack of preparation after teaching all day, he accepted the challenge.
The fight was bare-knuckle, with no gloves, no rounds, and headbutts allowed. Riccio, a larger professional fighter, dominated the bout. Robin attempted a takedown, which Riccio defended, and ended up in Robin’s guard.
Damien Riccio landed punches and headbutts, wearing Robin down. Eventually, Robin tapped out, likely from exhaustion and the accumulating strikes, marking a rare Gracie Challenge loss.
The fight was recorded and went viral, challenging the Gracie’s aura of invincibility.
Aftermath
After Damien Riccio’s victory in the Gracie Challenge was posted online, all hell broke loose online and IRL.
- The Gracie Response: Royce Gracie, Robin’s brother, was furious. He sent threatening emails to Riccio, vowing revenge, and posted on forums like Atama BJJ, escalating the feud. Royce, Robin, and other Gracie students reportedly traveled from Spain to Perpignan to confront Riccio at a bar where he worked.
- Confrontation: Accounts of what happened vary. Some claim a brawl ensued, with Royce allegedly attacking Riccio’s younger brother, Pepe. Others suggest Riccio fired a gun in the air to break up the scuffle, causing the Gracies to flee. Both Riccio and the Gracies denied rumors of a severe beating or jumping, and no definitive evidence confirms the gun incident.
- Online Feud: The conflict spilled onto forums, with Riccio and Royce exchanging heated messages. Riccio challenged Royce or other Gracies to fight, claiming his family was as large and ready as theirs. Robin sought a formal rematch, but Riccio refused, possibly capitalizing on his victory’s notoriety.
Riccio’s Life After The Challenge
After things deescalated between Riccio and the Gracie family, Damien continued his MMA career. He went on to fight in the UK and Japan with mixed results against notable fighters like Yushin Okami and Mach Sakurai.
Riccio also faced personal tragedies, including his brother Pepe’s death in a climbing accident. After his brother’s death, Damien was heartbroken and never the same.
Damien Riccio would later suffer two severe motorcycle accidents and his own death from a heart attack in 2016.
Did the Loss Affect the Gracie’s Legacy?
The incident didn’t significantly dent the Gracie legacy, as BJJ’s effectiveness was already proven, but it highlighted the evolving MMA landscape where pure BJJ faced challenges against well-rounded fighters.

Bobby is martial artist for almost 20 years with a BJJ black belt under Professor Sergio Miranda. He is also a karate black and former combat sports athlete, who loves all things grappling.
