Who is Fabio Gurgel?
Fábio Duca Gurgel do Amaral, born January 18, 1970, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, is a 7th-degree coral belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), a four-time world champion, and co-founder of the Alliance Jiu-Jitsu team, widely regarded as the most successful BJJ team in history.
Known as “The General,” a nickname given by former student Leo Negão for his commanding leadership, Gurgel is celebrated as one of the greatest BJJ competitors and coaches of his generation.
His contributions have shaped modern BJJ through his technical prowess, innovative coaching, and business acumen, expanding Alliance to over 330 academies across 29 countries.
A Timeline of Gurgel’s BJJ Journey
Gurgel began training BJJ at age 13 under Romero “Jacaré” Cavalcanti and became a prodigy.
He won titles as a blue and purple belt and became an instructor at Jacaré Jiu-Jitsu by 16. At 19, Fabio earned his black belt in 1989, becoming Cavalcanti’s first black belt recipient.
In 1993, alongside Cavalcanti, Alexandre Paiva, and his brother Fernando Gurgel, he founded Alliance, which revolutionized BJJ with its professional structure and competitive dominance, securing 12 men’s and 10 women’s world championships.
Fabio Gurgel’s competitive career includes four IBJJF World Championships (1996, 1997, 2000, 2001), three Brazilian National Championships, three European Championships, and two Pan-American Championships.
He also competed in mixed martial arts (MMA) and Vale Tudo, notably fighting in UFC 11 in 1996 and facing Mark Kerr in a grueling 30-minute Vale Tudo bout in 1997.
As a coach, Gurgel has trained over 50 world champions, including Marcelo Garcia, Rubens “Cobrinha” Charles, Gabi Garcia, Bernardo Faria, and Lucas Lepri, fostering a diverse range of styles at Alliance’s São Paulo headquarters.
His leadership navigated Alliance through challenges, such as a split in the early 2000s when key members left to form rival teams, yet he rebuilt Alliance into a dominant force, winning nine consecutive world titles from 2008 to 2016.
Gurgel is also an author, with works like Manual Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Inabalável, and a mentor who promotes BJJ as a tool for personal development through seminars and his “Viver de Jiu Jitsu” platform.
