Is The Gi Dying? The Stats Say No
One of the most annoying topics on BJJ forums that won’t seem to die is the topic of “is the GI dying? Well, according to the stats from IBJJF Rankings on IG, Gi Jiu-Jitsu is doing just fine.
The website has tallied up every IBJJF match from over the last eight months from the juvenile, adult, and master divisions.
- Gi Matches: 54,307
- No-Gi Marches: 9,479

Stats Not Including Other Promotions
While these stats do answer the question of whether the Gi is dying, the stats do not include the number of matches other organizations, like the ADCC, AJP, or UAEJJF.
However, there is no way to list every match from every ADCC open event this year, as the organization does not keep track of the numbers. AJP does keep track of the matches of every event, but they host far more Gi events than No-Gi events.
The IBJJF also hosts numerous more events per year than ADCC.

From the stats collected by the IBJJF Rankings, the IBJJF has done over six times more Gi matches than No-Gi matches. It seems like GI Jiu-Jitsu is doing just fine.
