Most annoying BJJ personalities

Within the BJJ community, there’s a facade that we all love each other and get along. However, there are certain teammates who annoy the hell out of the rest of the gym.

That’s why we’ve listed some of the most annoying BJJ personalities. Check out who are the most annoying BJJ personalities below and let us know if we missed any type of Jiu-Jitsu practitioner who annoys you.

The Let’s Go Light Guy/Girl

Let’s start off the list of the most annoying BJJ personalities with a Jiu-Jitsu person nobody likes. The light guy/girl, let’s go, is exceptionally frustrating.

Before you roll with them, they will always say the phrase, “Let’s go light.” However, they often have no intention of going light and go 100% any time they see an advantage. Always be on the lookout for this annoying BJJ person.

The Smelly Teammate

One of the most annoying BJJ personalities is the smelly teammate. Every gym has one, and everyone dreads training with them.

They reek of a dead animal and body excrement and, for whatever reason, always want to roll with you. You hold your breath for the entire round against them, only to realize their stink is now on you.

You’ll have to douse yourself in bleach during your after-training shower to get their stink off.

The Spazz

The spazz is another one of the most annoying BJJ personalities everyone dreads training with. No technique to be had when rolling with this guy. Just frantic spazzing for half a round until you control them and put on a submission.

Let’s Just Roll Guy

The let’s just roll guy is one of the most annoying BJJ personalities for students and instructors. They constantly whine and moan about doing the technique and want to get straight rolling.

However, despite constantly rolling, they never get better and make the same three moves that don’t work. Training with this person is a complete waste of time.

The Coach

We’ve all trained with a teammate who wants to “coach you” during a live training session. In reality, they’re trying to save face before you submit them to show you how to move correctly.

Nothing is more annoying than getting your training flow stopped by somebody who can’t accept losing.

The Leg Locker

Over the last decade, leg locks have become more prevalent, and unfortunately, so has the leg locker. The leg locker is usually a lower belt fixated on leg locks. They will only go for poorly executed leg attacks.

They have no understanding of passing or playing guard and keep trying to be a dime-store, Gordon Ryan.

Never on Time Teammate

There’s the old BJJ meme that a purple belt is never on time and comes in late to skip warm-ups. The never-on-time teammate always seems to stroll in 30 minutes late and always has an excuse ready.

Everybody else gets to class on time, but they always stroll in right in the middle of class.

Wannabe Influencers

With the unfortunate rise in social media influencers, BJJ gyms now have many annoying wannabe influencers. These fake influencers make multiple daily posts about training and Jiu-Jitsu like they’re getting paid.

In reality, they don’t even have the most friends and followers in class and get maybe 10 likes per post. However, that doesn’t stop them from posting identical played-out posts as other prominent influencers.

The Brown Noser

Brown nosers aren’t just at your school or work but can also be within your gym. The brown noser isn’t only one of the most annoying BJJ personalities but the most hated. They’re like Randall from the old cartoon Recess.

They follow around the instructor like a puppy dog looking for a treat. Always trying to point out what others are doing wrong and trying to earn brownie points with the black belts.

No Gas Tank

No gas tank guy has to be one of the most annoying BJJ people to roll with. They’ve trained for years but never developed a good gas tank. Every time you roll with them, they quit midway through the round, sucking air and dying on the sidelines.

The Talker

Every gym has that student who just won’t shut the hell up. They love talking and will chatter throughout drilling and an entire rolling round.

No, I didn’t see that Netflix show you’re talking about. I’m trying to drill over here.

Lower Belt Bully

Every Jiu-Jitsu school seems to have someone who likes preying upon the lower belts. They’ll shy away from the upper belts but become Ffion Davies when a blue belt doesn’t have a partner.

Lower belt bullies are easily one of the most annoying BJJ personalities.

Cult Member

Unfortunately, some Jiu-Jitsu academies can be a bit cultish, which can lead to one of the most annoying BJJ personalities: the cult member.

The cult member buys into the gym’s ideology 100% and regurgitates all the talking points. They train at their affiliate school and scoff at anyone who trains elsewhere. This is quite common at gyms like Gracie Barra and 10th Planet

Mr./Mrs. Takes Rounds Off

Mr./Mrs. Takes rounds off is the grappler, who, for some reason, is always on the sideline during rolling. It’s not that they don’t have a gas tank, but they’re scared of getting tired.

This BJJ personality is especially annoying when you have even numbers in class, and they want to sit out.

Never Let You Drill The Move Guy

The “never let you drill the move” guy is among the most annoying BJJ personalities. This grappler does not grasp the idea of drilling and resists everything you try during a technique.

Dealing with this teammate often ruins your training session and puts you in a bad mood for the rest of the day. You will likely get after them in rolling for messing up your drilling time.

Edward Scissorhands

Edward Scissorhands, or Freddy Krueger, as some gyms may call them, are the Jiu-Jitsu guys who don’t cut their nails. They are some of the most annoying BJJ personalities with knives for fingers and toenails.

Every time you roll with them, it looks like you got done having a knife fight. Nasty cut marks on your neck, arms, and legs that are likely to get infected from their dirty nails.

The Phone Addict

Whenever you’re doing live rounds at the gym, one teammate seems to be on their phone. They’re always more interested in what’s going on in their phone than getting better at Jiu-Jitsu.

Mr./Mrs. What If

No list of the most annoying BJJ personalities would be complete without Mr./Mrs. What if teammates always ask the dumbest questions when the professor explains the day’s technique.

It’s always an absurd “what if” question that makes everyone in the room roll their eyes.

Internet Technique Teammate

Every BJJ academy has an internet technique teammate. They always want to try a highly technical technique that they watched once online.

These goofy grapplers never drill basic techniques but want to try doing the most intricate techniques possible.

The Gym Hopper/Open Mat Guy

For gym owners, one of the most annoying BJJ personalities is the gym hopper or open mat guy. These BJJ practitioners have made a name for themselves within their city for not paying gym fees.

Every week, they bounce from gym to gym, looking for open mats and never paying gyms. They always have an excuse for not paying, which they use at every Jiu-Jitsu gym.

Trendy Move Teammate

Next to the internet technique teammate is the trendy move teammate. Whatever the trendiest technique is, they are on the mat trying it and probably doing it poorly.

You’ve seen them attempt the John Danaher leg lock system to squid guard and probably the buggy choke. Their basics are garbage, but they must try the new trendy move.
