Over on the Reddit BJJ forum, they have been tearing up a BJJ black belt for going on bro influencer rants. One in particular that caught heat from the community was one where he started talking about wearing his Rolex to class.
“Someone asked me, like, man, they saw me at the gym with my Rolex. Bro, you wear your Rolex to the gym? Yeah, of course.
What is the point of having anything if you don’t use it? God gave you legs. Don’t you just sit down all day? No, you go for a walk, you want to enjoy yourself.”- Motivational BJJ black belt.
The commenters were ruthless on this first video
“He just wanted to mention he has a Rolex”
“Probably just bought a fake and was upset no one had asked him about it yet”
A black belt on the thread had one of the best responses.
“Every time I hear a black belt give a speech I think about the millionaire tech nerds, doctors, lawyers, and special forces students sitting there listening. The fact that we think bjj gives us some authority to lecture on morality, character, or work ethic is insanity to me. We strangle people good. That’s it.”
Multiple other vídeos of this black belt were posted on Reddit, including this one below where he calls himself “sensei.”
The Job of a BJJ Instructor
There’s nothing wrong with giving motivational speeches to your students from time to time, but students do not want to hear 20-30 minute life lesson speeches at the end of every class.
As a BJJ black belt instructor, your job consists of this:

- Create A Positive Space That Welcomes All Skill Levels & Types Of People
- Best A Teacher & Friend Your Students Trust
It’s okay to give speeches from time to time, but if you overdo it, you’ll end up the butt of a joke, like this instructor in the videos.
