t looks like Garry Tonon will make his MMA debut at One FC on March 24 in Bangkok. No opponent has been confirmed yet.
Tonon will compete in the welterweight division which former champion Ben Askren dominated until he decided to hang up his gloves last year. Askren has mentioned that coming out of retirement is a possibility if the right fight was offered to him.
Askren is one of the most dominant wrestlers in MMA. Tonnon is one of the best grapplers in the Jiu-jitsu arena. An MMA mega fight between the two will be something fans might want to see.
It will be very interesting to see how the ‘’Lion Killer’’ will transition to MMA. Somethings to consider would be the cage and striking. Most of Tonon’s competitions have been on jiu-jitsu mats, and zero involved striking.
We have witnessed time and time again that adjusting to the cage may take some time. Even for MMA athletes. Mirko Cro Cop has been outspoken about this after he joined the UFC from Pride.
Tonnon recently tweeted:
In 26 years I’ve never gone through anything more disheartening and difficult than full MMA sparring for 25minutes with @jakeshieldsajj. I will be very ready for @ONEChampionship if Jake doesn’t kill me first.

It is great to see that Tonnon has training partners of this caliber. Jake Shields has competed at the highest level of Mixed Martial Arts. It will help with his transition into MMA.
