Mikey Musumeci Getting Another Easy Fight?
After Mikey Musumeci competed in the first UFC BJJ 1 event against Rerisson Gabriel, it was met with a lot of criticism from fans. Gabriel was a primarily Gi grappler being put in against Mikey, who had tons more experience in No-Gi.
Musumeci made easy work of Gabriel, and fans were not impressed by the win. For his next fight, the fans were hoping that the UFC BJJ would put in a more well-known No-Gi grappler to challenge Mikey.
Obviously, the UFC BJJ brass didn’t get the message, as the main event for UFC BJJ 3 on October 2nd is Mikey Musumeci vs. Kevin Carrasco.
With total respect to Kevin Carrasco, why is he(a relatively unknown)in a main event world title match against one of the best in the world?
According to Carrasco’s BJJ Hero page, his biggest win was at the 2022 Jiu-Jitsu Con and a 3rd place finish at last year’s IBJJF World Championship. All of which was in the Gi.
A respectable resume for an average pro, but like Gabriel in Musumeci’s first match, Carrasco is primarily a Gi competitor. Why is he in a main event title match for a No-Gi world title?
This makes no sense to anyone other than the UFC BJJ is giving Musumeci an easy match-up(again). How does putting the face of the promotion against an unknown Gi grappler advance the sport?
Fans are not going to tune in to see Musumeci compete against somebody nobody knows and likely doesn’t stand a chance.
If the UFC BJJ wants us to watch, they have to do better than this. We’re not tuning in to watch Mikey Musumeci dominate random opponents.
