Nicky Ryan on the Possibility of Retirement
Nicky Ryan is without a doubt one of the most talented grapplers on the planet. But unfortunately for Nicky, the sport has taken a heavy toll on his body
The grappling prodigy is currently recovering from his second major knee surgery and the possibility of retirement has been on Ryan’s mind. On The White Monster podcast, Ryan stated that he would likely retire if he suffers another knee injury.
“One more surgery and that’s it for me, I’m done… If I retear this ACL, I’m just going to be a full-time coach. I’m 23 going on three knee surgeries. I’m like if I get one more, like that’s it for me.”- Nicky Ryan.
Ryan’s Dislike of Competing
Later in the podcast, Nicky also revealed a surprising fact about himself. The talented young grappler is not a fan of competition.
“I love winning. I hate competing. I hate the leadup to competition. I get so nervous every single time before I compete. I think that’s why a lot of my performances are like wish-washy, I have really good performances and then really bad performances. Me personally, I hate competing but I still do want to accomplish things in the sport, like winning an ADCC or winning a CJI. But I definitely am not a fan of competing.”- Nicky Ryan.
This revealing statement is something a lot of BJJ practitioners(and myself) can relate to.
