Nicky Ryan recently broke the news that he will be undergoing a full ACL reconstruction and will likely miss competing in 2025.

Ryan Announces Full ACL Reconstruction Surgery

Nicky Ryan broke the news that he will be undergoing ACL reconstruction surgery this year. This major surgery will likely put Nicky out of training and competing for the foreseeable future.

Ryan has been plagued with knee problems since 2021 and has never taken the time to heal.

The injury got incrementally worse as the years went on as he continued competing and training. During his camp for CJI 1, Nicky’s knee finally gave out completely.

I mean, probably going to be getting ACL reconstruction soon, so that kind of sucks.

It was almost, what, three years with no ACL?

And then actually, in the last CJI camp, it just completely ruined my camp.

Like, I pretty much didn’t train for like the last three weeks because anytime I train, it would just get super sore and I’d be literally limping that night.

It gets sore and on days where I really like scrap, especially if I’m wrestling, it’ll be buckling when I’m just walking around the house and stuff.

I got an MRI three years ago when I first tore it, found out it was fully torn and then I just got an MRI done a few days ago actually and then I have the follow-up appointment with the surgeon next Friday. Probably figure out a surgery schedule.”- Nicky Ryan

Don’t Put Off Major Surgeries

Any young grapplers with dreams of competing professionally should take this story as a warning. Nicky Ryan is a world-class talent whose career has been stalled by putting off a major surgery.

A major injury to something such as your ACL cannot be ignored. It doesn’t matter how talented or tough you are.

If you get injured and wish to continue a competitive career you must take time off and get the surgery.
