Richard Bresler: Gracie Jiu-Jitsu’s First American Student Passes Away
It’s sad to report the passing of American Jiu-Jitsu black belt Richard Bresler. Richard holds a special place in BJJ history as Gracie Jiu-Jitsu’s very first American student.
In an interview with Jits Magazine from two years ago, Bresler shared how Jiu-Jitsu changed his life.
“My life changed the day I met Rorion. Before that, I was kind of a mess. I was doing a lot of drugs. I had no real direction in life. When I met Rorion and found Jiu-Jitsu, it was the first time in a long time that something really excited me. It was maybe the first thing in my life that I really got excited about. And so, because of that, Jiu-Jitsu became this catalyst for a lot of positive changes in my life. It really saved my life, in that way.”- Richard Bresler.
Richard Bresler: The 4th American Coral Belt
Before Richard’s passing, he was surprised with a hospital visit from Rener and Ryron Gracie in February 2025. They awarded him his coral belt to become the 4th American to receive this honor.
Unfortunately, the cancer took a toll on Richard’s body, and he passed away on July 3rd, 2025. He was loved by many and will forever hold a special place in Jiu-Jitsu history.
