The “Gold” Standard: Training With the Aeroweave Ultralight Gi

Last updated on 26.04.2023 by

Lighter Gi’s are favored by Brazilian Jiu Jitsu competitors. They are more comfortable, and if you are stepping on the scale, you don’t want a heavy Gi to risk throwing off your weight. Gold BJJ is a Jiu Jitsu apparel company, and they were kind enough to send us one of their Aeroweave Ultralight Gis for a hands-on review!

Editorial Disclaimer:

We reached out to Gold BJJ to see if we could get a Gi to review, and they were excited about the opportunity to show off their product. Gold BJJ provided us with their Aeroweave Ultralight Gi in exchange for an open and honest review of their product. We are also a part of the Gold BJJ Affiliate Program and Amazon Affiliate Program. Buying from our links will not make your order more expensive. However, we will receive a portion of each sale to support our blog.

Aeroweave Ultralight Gi Review

Gold BJJ Aeroweave Ultralight Gi

Technical Aspects

Gold BJJ’s Aeroweave Ultralight Gi is a reinforced Pearl weave Gi. Despite being lightweight, it’s made to take a beating. Gold BJJ says on their website, “If it can’t take everything you dish out while training Jiu Jitsu, let us know and we will replace or refund it.” It should also be noted that the “Areoweave” is no ordinary pearl weave gi.

Most Pearl weave Gi’s weigh about 300-500 GSM. (Grams per Square Meter) However, the Aeroweave Ultralight features a 275 GSM Kimono, making it one of the lightest Gis on the market. For comparison: Hayabusa’s “Lightweight” Gi is a whopping 425 GSM.

“Pearl Weave” seems to be the standard all Gi’s are moving to. “Pearl Weave” refers to how the fabric is sewn, with multiple beads aligned close together. Pearl weave Gi’s are stronger and more durable than other kinds of Gi weaves. It’s also more difficult for pearl weave Gi’s to shrink. All of Gold BJJ Gi’s are pre-shrunk, so you don’t have to worry about washing and drying them.

Style

While many Jiu Jitsu companies opt for large bolstered letters or crazy logos. Gold BJJ opted for a sleek, minimalist design. They also have five colors you can choose from. White, Black, Grey, Navy, and Royal Blue. The absence of patches and ultra-lightweight design make this Gi STELLAR for competition.

Rolling with the Areoweave Ultra Light Gi

Many BJJ gyms (like my own) don’t have real air conditioning. Many simply have large fans or big doors that can be opened up. Right away, I could tell that Aeroweave Ultralight Gi was going to be a must-have for the Summer months. If you are someone who gets hot during training, this is the Gi that can help mitigate you being exhausted.

The biggest thing I noticed wearing this Gi is that I was able to get more rounds in because I was less exhausted. I never once had to take the Gi top off because I had to cool down. I am very excited to wear this Gi when I go and compete next.

Do Lighter-Weight Gi’s Not Last as Long?

Aeroweave Ultralight Gi Review

The myth you are going to hear is that lighter Gi’s aren’t as strong as heavyweight ones. In the case of Gold BJJ, this isn’t true at all. In fact, Gold BJJ’s ultra-lightweight Gi’s are unbelievably strong. If you visit their website, they even have a picture of someone doing a pull-up with one. I was curious if we could recreate this: So I had a few gym friends try it out:

About Gold BJJ

Gold BJJ is a relatively young company. Started in 2016 by two dedicated BJJ practitioners, Cole and Dave. The company prides itself on its customer service. Cole and Dave interact with their customers every day, and are proud representatives of their brand. Gold BJJ stock and ship all of their orders within one business day, and they train in their gear every morning.

Military and First Responders Program

One of my personal favorite things about Gold BJJ is their military and first responders program. All a customer has to do is provide proof they are a first responder or are someone who has a prior service record, and Gold BJJ will give them a 40% discount.

On their website, Gold BJJ has pictures of the custom BJJ Gis they made for the US Marshal Service. They also provided the Newark Police department with custom gear for their in house training program.

If you want to take advantage of the Military and First Responders program, all you have to do is click here to view their website where you can apply for it!

Who Would I Recommend this Gi to?

I would recommend Aeroweave Ultralight Gi to anyone who competes or gets hot on the mat. Having a lightweight Gi is a necessity for summer months, and a necessity for gyms that get hot. I would also recommend this Gi to anyone who is starting Jiu Jitsu. Gold BJJ’s motto is “For the Journey” and this is certainly a product that will last the long journey to black belt.

Who Would I NOT Recommend this Gi to?

While I personally love this Gi, obviously not everybody who trains might have the same opinion. Some practitioners prefer Gi’s with a much higher GSM because it can actually be more difficult for someone to establish grips on the collar or sleeves. While these high GSM Gi’s are banned in many competitions, they absolutely exist and people roll with them all the time.

While this Gi is great for training in the heat, you might be wondering about training in the cold with it. The worst-case scenario of training in the cold with this gi: is that you might just have to put on a long sleeve rashguard underneath it.

Verdict: 10/10 Ultra High Quality Gi

Aeroweave Ultralight Gi is certainly the lightest Gi I have ever trained with. It’s also definitely going to be the Gi I compete with from now on. I am also very impressed by the quality and strength of the fabric. It feels soft when you are wearing it, but it also is strong enough to do pull-ups with.

I personally also like to customize my Gi’s with patches, and the minimalist style gives me tons of room to add my own flare to this already great looking product. I also like to support brands that are owned and operated by people in the community, and are worn daily by the people who sell them.
