Travis Stevens, 2016 Olympic silver medalist in Judo teaches how to break the grip.
The concept of breaking your opponent’s grip on the feet is the same as in ground fighting. Meaning that in order to create an offense you need to break the grip of the other person and establish your own.
Travis emphasizes the importance of making sure that you are creating space by using the arm which is free and ‘’stiff’’ arming your opponent. The other key detail is making sure you are not exposing yourself to other attacks as you are trying to break away from the grip.
Try and pay attention to the technique he uses for the takedown. It is called Ouchi gari (Inner reap). This technique allows for a quick attack and is fairly safe when it comes to Jiu-jitsu.
